Major eruption off flank of Pu`u O`o - lava lake collapses

USGS "Pu`u `O`o crater floor collapsed yesterday afternoon taking the lava lake with it; about 15 minutes after the start of the collapse, a high-volume lava flow issued from west flank vents on Pu`u `O`o Cone and flowed northwest and south along the west edge of previous flows.

Details are all found within the USGS/HVO updates

Also check out their two new webcams and images page
; links are found at the top of the update page.

  1. Any ideas where we could go to see the lava flow? We'll be getting to Hawaii tomorrow. :-)

  2. The lava is flowing within restricted areas at this time. I don't think the tour helicopters can get close but try phoning them. The lava glow can be seen after dark from the Kalapana area. Check out the national park for sure and Jaggar Museum day & night.
    Have a great visit Dawn.

  3. We were flying in a doors off helicopter when this flow began... I posted our video here:

    enjoy! It was INCREDIBLE
